Hunting scene
Polychrome wax, 101 x 89 x 24 cm
The waxwork in question, rare in quality and compositional richness, depicts a complex hunting scene, in an allegorical representation, with felines, elephants, horses, dogs, birds, figures, trees and huts.
The richness of the work allows us to grasp two different levels of reading, one of the whole, of great strength and impact and one of refinement of detail where it is possible to grasp the ductility of this material and the individual elements of the whole. Among these we can mention the lion that seems to bite the hunter on horseback, the elephant on the ground bitten by the crocodile or the jaguar surrounded by the scales of the snake.
A ductile and easily mouldable material, wax has been used, for thousands of years, in different ways: both as a support material for some artistic techniques (e.g. lost wax casting, encaustic painting, and as a real sculptural material for melt or model. The importance of wax in the history of sculpture is however undeniable. This is the case, for example, of the frescoes by Luca Signorelli in the Cathedral of Orvieto. On the right wall of the chapel of San Brizio, in the scene depicting the Resurrection of flesh, there are, in fact, wax tablets covered in gold leaf that decorate the entire background of the sky and the lacunars that define the architecture that frames the scene.
