COD 10843

Large French sculpture from the second half of the 19th century. Polychrome terracotta work depicting a mythological subject, the bust of the God Pan, of great quality and personality with an almost grotesque character. Non-Olympian deity with the appearance of a satyr or faun, representing the force of nature. The word panic derives from his name, since if he was disturbed he would emit terrifying screams causing uncontrolled fear. Hard to find statue in beautiful patina, for antique dealers, interior decorators and collectors of ancient sculptures. Finely detailed in the smallest details, note the flute tied to Pan's neck with which he is often represented. This instrument takes the name of Syringe because according to the myth the nymph Syringe, fleeing from the God who wanted to possess her, reached a stream. Unable to escape, she invoked the Naiads (water nymphs) who transformed her into a bundle of marsh reeds that emitted a delicate sound when the wind blew. Pan then decided to build a new musical instrument which he named after the Nymph. It is in good condition, structurally sound, with some small signs of aging.
