Portrait of Giuseppe Garibaldi in Caprera

Oil on canvas, 104 x 78 cm

With frame, 115,5 x 90 cm

Giuseppe Garibaldi, with his face weathered by time, dominates the composition, portrayed half-length with his left hand resting on his hip and his right hand firmly on the hilt of his service saber, in a pose that any 19th-century observer would have immediately recognized. The red shirt, by now an emblem of his figure, captures the light with soft, ample folds. His thick, graying beard, framed by deep wrinkles around his eyes, conveys the image of a man no longer young, marked by age and battles, and suggests a date for the work between the late 1860s and the early 1890s, perhaps executed immediately after his death in 1882, as a memorial. Behind him, a glimpse of a terrace overlooking the sea at sunset opens up, with rosy skies blending into a calm marine horizon, an image that evokes the hero's retreat to Caprera, the island he chose as a refuge in the final years of his life. Garibaldi had purchased part of it in 1855, making it his permanent residence despite repeated departures for military and political campaigns, until his death on June 2, 1882. It was precisely during the long periods of isolation on Caprera, and particularly after the defeat at Mentana in 1867, that the hero devoted himself more consistently to writing: he resumed and expanded his Autobiographical Memoirs, begun years earlier during his second South American exile, and combined them with patriotic and popular novels such as Clelia: il governo del monaco and Cantoni il volontario, as well as more intimate and political texts, including the famous testament in which he expressed his last wishes. On the right, a dark wall creates a striking contrast, isolating the figure and accentuating its monumentality, separating the intimate space of the portrait from the luminous landscape that opens up on the other side of the canvas.

This approach was not the painter's original invention, but descends directly from a photographic prototype that became famous throughout Europe: the shot taken by Gustave Le Gray in 1860 in Palermo, in the aftermath of the Expedition of the Thousand. That photograph, with the red shirt, the saber, and the pose of his hands, forever fixed the public image of Garibaldi, transforming it into an iconographic model tirelessly replicated for decades. Between 1860 and 1890, Italy experienced a veritable flowering of Garibaldi portraiture, fueled by the leader's enormous popularity among the bourgeois and working-class public. Mutual aid societies, municipalities, democratic circles, and private collectors commissioned paintings celebrating the hero of two worlds in large numbers, often relying on academically trained painters active at the local level, capable of combining the official photographic pose with personal pictorial solutions. The sea off Caprera, the landscapes of the Risorgimento battles, and the skies at sunset, charged with symbolic meaning, became recurring backdrops, capable of transforming a simple portrait into a small visual narrative of the hero's existential trajectory, from military glory to contemplative retreat. The work presented here should also be read in this context: one example, among many produced during that era, of a photographic image's extraordinary ability to generate an entire pictorial genre, capable of spanning decades while maintaining its evocative power and its identity-building value for a united Italy.
