English painter (late 19th century) – Landscape with Highland herd by the lake.

102 x 77 cm (without frame) – 108 x 82 cm (with frame).

Oil on canvas, in a gilded wooden frame.

The composition depicts a landscape of the Scottish Highlands with a herd of Highland cattle on the shore of a lake. In the background, mountain slopes unfold, bathed in a diffuse, cloudy light, typical of the late-19th-century British landscape tradition. The rendering of the long-haired cattle, with their characteristic prominent horns, reveals a good understanding of the subject and a fluid brushstroke in depicting the vegetation and the reflections in the water. The work is part of the genre of Victorian-style British animal and landscape painting.
