18th-19th century
31,5 x 26,5 cm (without frame) - 44,5 x 38,5 cm (with frame).
English painter (18th-19th century) – Portrait of a gentleman with a pug.
31,5 x 26,5 cm (without frame) – 44,5 x 38,5 cm (with frame).
Oil on canvas, in a contemporary carved and gilded wooden frame.
The painting depicts a gentleman seated outdoors, dressed in a dark jacket and red waistcoat, with powdered hair. Beside him, a table holds a sheet of music and a flute, details that hint at the sitter's musical inclinations. At his feet sits a pug with a gold collar. The background is a garden with trees and, on the left, a balustrade with two decorative vases. The presence of the musical attributes and the dog hark back to the tradition of late-eighteenth-century British bourgeois portraiture, in the orbit of provincial painters active between 1785 and 1805.
Condition report: Lined canvas. The painted surface is in good condition, with signs of aging and wear. The painting is in its contemporary frame.
