Work signed lower left: «F. Walters».
Frank Walters was a British painter active between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, specializing in the depiction of Scottish landscapes and Highland cattle. His work is in line with the British animalist tradition, which during the 19th century had found its most celebrated exponent in Edwin Landseer, elevating the figure of Highland cattle to a noble pictorial subject and highly commercially successful. In this painting, three cattle with thick red and tawny manes are depicted on the shore of a mountain lake, in an autumnal landscape dominated by cloudy skies and mountainous masses rendered with rich brushstrokes. The diffused light filtering through the clouds enlivens the body of water and lends the scene a melancholy and contemplative atmosphere, typical of Romantic painting of Nordic subjects.
