Description

Fine and elegant table clock in gilded and patinated mercury bronze, depicting a man of letters or poet at his work table. France, period 1825-1840. Given the very characteristic physiognomy of the character in effigy and considering the elements present on the work table (in addition to the large tome placed on the surface and the oil lamp, the main emblem of the Age of Enlightenment, a lyre is placed on the lion protomes that act as supports, symbol of Poetry), it can be deduced with some certainty that the great intellectual, philosopher and playwright Voltaire must be recognized in the man depicted. Guilloche silver dial characterized by silver patina. . The bronze sculpture was created using the casting technique starting from a wax model. The architecture of French watch cases is characterized by an accentuated interiority, unlike, for example, English ones, where the emphasis was placed on demonstrating the functionality of the movement. French craftsmen placed the small round movement boxes in rather voluminous and artistically crafted cases, often decorated with sculptural compositions. The French masters were famous throughout the world for the filigree of their castings, for the details of their chasing, for the picturesque gilding and patination. Cosmetic/decorative condition is exceptionally good, minor signs of wear due to age and use. The movement is in working order but would need to be serviced, while the sound dial is in working order.

Provenance: Imola, Private Collection.

Certification of authenticity and lawful provenance of the work is issued in accordance with the law.
