Sebastiano Ricci (Belluno 1659 – Venice 1734) attributable to
Holy Family with Saint Anne
Oil painting on canvas
135 x 100 cm. – with frame 147 x 112 cm.
This Holy Family with Saint Anne has an extraordinary scenic impact and, conceived by the author according to the most canonical pyramidal composition of Leonardo's memory, is highlighted by a studied plasticity of the figures and their perfect articulation in space.
At the top, Saint Joseph, leaning on his staff, serenely watches over the Madonna, holding her son on her lap, with whom she exchanges a loving glance, while Anna kneels before them as a sign of respect.
This is a work of excellent quality which reproduces a composition by the great Baroque painter Sebastiano Ricci (Belluno 1659 – Venice 1734), from the Molinari Pradelli art collection (published in Volpe C., La Raccolta Molinari Pradelli. Dipinti del Sei e Settecento, 1984, p. 88, n. 46, and again in the monograph by Daniels J., L'opera completa di Sebastiano Ricci, 1976, p. 111, n. 264)

Although the quality of execution could lead us to attribute our canvas to the Venetian master, for the sake of scruple we prefer to broaden the reference to an author working in the workshop or to one of his close collaborators who, upon request, created a similar version.
An artist of extraordinary fame, celebrated by his contemporaries and sought after by the most prestigious patrons, Ricci is considered one of the main figures in the renaissance of Venetian painting in the 1700th century. His training took place by studying the works of Paolo Veronese and other Italian painters of the XNUMXth century, influencing in turn the painters of the new generation, first and foremost Giambattista Tiepolo.
The work can in fact be read in its original derivation from Veronese models, with the pictorial material absorbed in a luminous system and in a compositional syntax typical of the Venetian styles of the sixteenth century (even in the individual elements, such as the column and balustrade) and reinterpreted in a contemporary key.
Note in particular the beautiful figure of the Virgin, draped in the ancient style, almost a classical statue in the background to the main scene, and in reality the true protagonist of the composition.
