Allegory of Abundance
Dough, 12 x 13 cm
In classical mythology, the Allegory of Abundance is depicted by a rather plump young nymph, her face lit up with bright colours, her head surrounded by a garland of flowers and fruit, holding in her arms one of the horns of the Amalthea goat filled with various products of the earth.
The cornucòpia, literally "horn of plenty", is a mythological symbol of food and abundance. It is found in the hands of the goddess Fortune, depicted here together with a putto supporting the weight of a basket of flowers. According to Greek mythology, the horn refers to the one lost from the river Achelous in the fight with Hercules for Deianira and filled by the Naiads with flowers and fruit, as a symbol of abundance, thus alluding to the fertility of the valley where the Achelous flowed.
According to another version of the myth, the horn belongs to Amalthea, the goat who welcomed and fed Zeus in his childhood in Crete. As thanks, the father of the Gods blessed his horns, giving them magical powers.
In the form of a horn overflowing with fruit and flowers it is often present in paintings in the arms of the symbolic figure of abundance.
