Lucia Ponga degli Ancillo (Venice 1887 – 1966) – Venetian capriccio with pier, gondola and sketches.
25 x 35 cm (without frame) – 44,5 x 55 cm (with frame).
Oil on panel, in a carved and gilded wooden frame.
Work signed lower left: «L. Ponga».
Lucia Ponga degli Ancillo trained in the Venetian artistic milieu at the turn of the twentieth century, cultivating a style of landscape and lagoon painting with a 19th-century influence. This oil on panel depicts a lagoon shore with a porticoed building and a bell tower on the left, cypress trees and other trees in the center, and a pier bustling with commoners going about their daily business. In the foreground is a gondola with a gondolier, while in the background are sailboats open on the lagoon. The sketches hark back to Guardi's repertoire, executed with a loose, vibrant brushstroke and a luminous palette dominated by the greens and blues of the sky and water.
