India - second half of the 18th century

Sizes

25,5x20,5 inch

Description

The painting has an illuminated work carried out with care through the use of very accurate brushstrokes and a skilful use of gold leaf. The scene has a rather rare representation: a tambura musician, a traditional Indian stringed instrument in the shape of a lute with an elongated neck, plays melodies accompanied by a young contortionist girl performing in a very complicated posture. From some elements of the painting, such as the musician's robe and golden turban and the dancer's gold jewels, it is clear that both artists belong to an aristocratic environment.
The state of conservation is good and the slight gaps in some pigments do not detract from the pleasantness of the painting.
