India - Mughal Empire (1526-1857)

Sizes

38.00x86.00 inch

Description

Wall architectural element in red sandstone carved with a repeated ornamental design that reflects the Khamsa, the hand of Fatima, an amulet decoration characteristic of the Islamic world. The Khamsas follow one another arranged alternately upwards and downwards.

Some traces of stratifications of ancient pigments are visible on the surface of the stone as well as mortar sediments on the back attributable to the fixing of the element to a more complex wall structure. The decorative fluidity of the panel manifests the expressive strength of the Indian tradition of stone carving.
The lithic panel is in a good state of conservation.
