late sixteenth century
cm height. 83
Upper Veneto area, 16th century
Madonna with child
Polychrome and gilded wood, cm high. 83
the sculpture depicts a solemn image of the Virgin holding the child in her arms, all rendered with extreme naturalness, demonstrating the best qualities of 500th century Alto Veneto sculpture in the elegance of the figure and its proportions as well as in the precision of the carving and in the calibrated rendering of the movement of the clothes.
The preciousness of the work is also highlighted by the polychromy enhanced by the gold details used in the Virgin's cloak, which creates vibrant light and chiaroscuro effects. The virgin, with her delicate physiognomy, is crowned and seated on a base that simulates a cloud, a reference to the divine. Both the mother and the son break the stasis of the pose by twisting the bodies and heads facing in opposite directions, enriching the composition with a delicate movement and a vitality that adheres to life.
