Venetian painter (19th century) – View of Padua from Porta Liviana with the Basilica of Sant'Antonio in the background.
37,5 x 48,5 cm (without frame) – 50,5 x 60 cm (with frame).
Oil on canvas, in a carved wooden frame.
The painting depicts a view of Padua dominated by the profile of the Basilica of Saint Anthony, the large Franciscan complex built starting in the 13th century in honor of the Portuguese saint, one of the most venerated in Christianity. The Basilica's unmistakable Byzantine domes and bell towers stand out clearly in the background, framed within a landscape composition that alternates masses of trees and urban architecture. To the right of the scene stands Porta Liviana, a medieval defensive tower once part of the city walls. The foreground is enlivened by figures of peasants engaged in agricultural work, a cart pulled by donkeys, and a group of children with a dog—figures that hark back to the 18th-century Venetian veduta tradition. The execution reveals an expert hand in rendering the atmospheric landscape, with a luminous application and a mastery of the effects of perspective depth.
