Work signed lower right: «VA Cargnel».
Vittorio Antonio Cargnel trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, where he studied under Giacomo Favretto, and developed his landscape sensibility in the Venetian realist tradition of the late nineteenth century. His painting is characterized by loose brushwork, a palette modulated by warm, atmospheric tones, and a rendering of diffused light that combines elements of the naturalist tradition with the influence of Lombard landscape painting.
The painting depicts a rural village with a church with a bell tower on the left, along a dirt road lined with figures. On the right, a large lake opens up, with a lone figure on the shore, a moored boat, and a mountainous backdrop veiled by the sunset light. The presence of a telegraph pole places the scene in a late 19th-century context. The composition reveals Cargnel's ability to combine naturalistic detail with intense atmospheric rendering, here dominated by pink and ash tones that recall the artist's landscape work from the turn of the century.
