Ancient large terracotta jar from the 19th century

Antique terracotta jar, made in the 19th century. An object with an unmistakable historical charm. This type of jar was produced in the Italian regions where oil production was typical (Liguria, Tuscany, or southern Italy). Given the lack of imprinted marks, it is difficult to precisely determine its region of origin. Historically, it was used to store and transport olive oil. The jar has a typical ovoid shape, rounded in the center and gradually tapering towards the base and top. The upper rim features a distinctive glossy yellow ochre glaze. Historically, this glaze served to prevent liquids from leaking through the porous terracotta and to protect the jar from insects. The main body is made of rough terracotta, a light beige, almost sandy color. The surface is uneven, but shows clear signs of craftsmanship, irregularities, and small defects typical of handmade objects. The jar is in good condition and features a characteristic patina, with whitish hues and surface discolorations due to exposure to the elements and the natural aging of the material. This jar, with its historic charm, can now be used as a decorative garden piece, ideal both as a stand-alone sculpture or as a large planter.
