Oil on canvas, in a gilded wooden frame.

Francesco Simonini, a painter from Parma who worked primarily in Venice in the first half of the 18th century, is best known for his battle scenes and animated landscapes, in which he demonstrates a confident mastery of natural settings and human movement. This painting depicts a river port landscape with a medieval tower at the center of the composition, against a mountainous backdrop. In the foreground, along the shore, groups of popular figures—fishermen, wayfarers, and a pack donkey—are animated, while to the left, sails and boats ply the calm waters. The sketches, handled with ease and vivacity, hark back to the Venetian tradition of animated landscapes of the early 18th century, with stylistic affinities attributable to Simonini's circle, in terms of the type of figures and the construction of space in planes sloping toward the luminous backdrop.
