Seventeenth century

Description

Seventeenth-century Flemish sculptor
Pair of bas-relief panels depicting the Allegory of Spring and the Allegory of Autumn

Oak wood
Each 45 x 14 cm.

It is a pair of friezes carved in bas-relief, which respectively depict the Allegory of Autumn, with a male figure holding ears of wheat in his hands, and the allegory of Spring, personified instead by a female figure holding a flowered basket.

Both figures, portrayed standing and half-naked as if to evoke two divinities, wrapped only in fluttering drapes, rest on capitals decorated with acanthus foliage, in Renaissance style.

The carving that characterizes these bas-reliefs is part of the Flemish production of the seventeenth century, and most likely originally placed on the sides of a fireplace or a door, or set in the boiserie of a patrician palace.
