Description

Two-body bookcase in imitation marble lacquered wood. Faenza, neoclassical period (last quarter of the 18th century). The frames, the capitals and the decorative pediment are refined by a silver-coloured finish, while the sides have a faux wood lacquer. The apical pediment is centered by a wooden carving depicting the mask of Greek tragedy, reproduced according to classical iconography, which suggests that the piece of furniture was originally used to conserve volumes with texts relating to dramaturgy and comedy and was part of a series of bookcases, each containing books dedicated to a specific theme, which together constituted the mobile furnishings of a private palace library. The front of the bookcase is made of poplar wood, while the sides, shelves and backs are made of fir wood. The hinges and locks are very refined, made of precious brass alloy.
Good state of conservation. Some wear and abrasions in the lacquering.
Provenance: Private collection of a family from Faenza.
Certification of authenticity is issued in accordance with the law.
