Workshop of Leandro del Ponte, known as Leandro Bassano (Bassano del Grappa 1557 – 1622)

Adoration of the Shepherds

Oil on canvas, 75 x 88 cm

With the 62 x 97 frame

The Adoration of the Shepherds examined here fits squarely into the successful iconographic tradition developed and spread by the Dal Ponte workshop, one of the most enduring and prolific pictorial dynasties of the Venetian Renaissance. The work, attributed to the circle of Leandro dal Ponte, known as Leandro Bassano, depicts a subject that enjoyed extraordinary success within the family workshop, so much so that it was replicated in numerous versions now held in museum and private collections throughout Europe and beyond. The origins of this artistic epic are rooted in 15th-century Bassano, when Jacopo di Berto, a tanner from Gallio, settled in Contra' del Ponte in 1464, giving rise to the surname that was destined to become famous. It was his son Francesco, known as the Elder, who initiated the painting activity, organizing a lively and versatile workshop, more artisanal than cultured, but already perfectly integrated into the local economic fabric. With the next generation, and particularly with Jacopo Bassano, the Dal Pontes' painting took a decisive qualitative leap: their art became more intense, poetic, and profoundly innovative, while maintaining a strong connection to the everyday. It was in this climate that an unmistakable figurative language was born, characterized by a "mystery of the everyday," capable of merging the sacred and the domestic, devotion and rural reality. Jacopo's sons—Francesco the Younger, Giambattista, Leandro, and Gerolamo—absorbed and developed this visual heritage, transforming the workshop into a truly international artistic enterprise. Their works, from large religious paintings to nocturnes and pastoral scenes, won over illustrious collectors across Europe. The canvas under consideration clearly reflects this productive context. The composition, set in a rustic stable overlooking the landscape, organizes the figures according to a well-established scheme: the Virgin, placed at the center, delicately bends toward the Child, while the shepherds, captured in poses of humble wonder, crowd the scene along with the animals. Stylistically, the work faithfully echoes the models and solutions of Dal Ponte's early Nativities, suggesting a dating within the production of Jacopo's sons. This Adoration of the Shepherds thus represents a significant piece in a history spanning over a century, concluded with the last replicas made by Jacopo Apollonio based on his grandfather's models. An epic of images that, originating in the Veneto province, established itself internationally, leaving a lasting mark on the history of European painting.
