Workshop of Pietro Longhi (Venice 1702 – Venice 1785) – The Declaration of Love.
71,5 cm x 55,5 cm.
Oil on canvas, without frame.
The work is based on the Declaration of Love by Pietro Longhi (Venice 1702 – Venice 1785), a work now lost and documented through the counterpart engraving by Jean-Baptiste Flipart.
Pietro Longhi was the leading exponent of genre painting in 18th-century Venice, capturing with sharp irony the customs and rituals of contemporary lagoon society. His interior scenes, conversations, visits, and domestic encounters, take place in bourgeois or aristocratic settings, populated by elegantly dressed figures and set in everyday contexts.
The scene depicts a young lady in a flowing white dress at the center of the composition, flanked by a gentleman in richly embroidered attire who addresses her deferentially. On the table is a spinning wheel with a gilded base, a recurring household tool in Longhi's repertoire. On the right, an elderly figure and a little girl read a book together. Longhi's workshop reproduced the master's compositions with variations to satisfy a widespread collector's demand in 18th-century Venice.
