The series derives from inventions by Giambattista Piazzetta (Venice 1683 – Venice 1754) then engraved by Marco Alvise Pitteri (Venice 1702 – Venice 1786).

The series depicts six apostles half-length on a dark background, identifiable, proceeding from the top left: Saint John the Evangelist, intent on writing with a pen and an open book, Saint James the Greater, in meditation, Saint Philip, with the staff of martyrdom, Saint Thomas, his gaze turned upwards, Saint Andrew, with the cross, Saint James the Less, in a thoughtful attitude.
The paintings fit perfectly within the Piazzetta style, reflecting the Venetian master's typical chiaroscuro approach: figures emerging from the darkness with strong contrasts of light, a vigorous rendering of elderly faces and hands, and the inner tension that characterizes the apostolate series by Piazzetta and his circle. The direct reference to the engravings of Marco Alvise Pitteri—a faithful graphic interpreter of Piazzetta's work—allows us to place the series within the context of Venetian painting in the first half of the 18th century, when such subjects circulated widely in both graphic and painted versions.

Condition report: Five original canvases and one lined canvas. The painted surface is in good condition, with signs of aging and wear. The paintings are presented in original 18th-century frames.
