Hunting scenes

Oil on canvas, 46,5 x 66,5 cm

The current pair of canvases offers a charming return from the hunt, full of an elegantly muted triumphalism. In the first painting, a group of men in bright red tunics are already intently busy, like the knight in the centre, playing some trumpets, punctuated by the slow rhythm of the horses that accompany them. A group of beagle dogs flanks the hunters, crossing a flow of light to which the artist only reports the vitreous consistency of the animals' paws, shining in a blue disk of melted water. The thin and vibrant brushstroke is enriched by a widespread play of light points that animate the horses' coats and the trumpet above which a pair of hares is placed, intentionally illuminated so that the viewer can admire the results of the hunt. In the second canvas the horses are embellished with rich harnesses, embellished with animal fur or bright blue gold fabrics with fringes. Hares and hunting dogs are proposed, this time tied to a wagon, the other of the greyhound breed. The natural scenery becomes more spectacular, introducing the artist to a distant sunset that begins to trace the clouds in the distance. The formal composition and the refined aesthetic quality achieved through the detailed narration of the figurative details allow us to bring the work back to the circle of Philipp Ferdinand de Hamilton. He was born in Brussels as the son of the Scottish painter James de Hamilton, who taught him to paint. From 1705 to 1750 he was court painter in Vienna, and is known for hunting scenes like his brother Johann Georg. He died in Vienna in 1750. You can compare these works with Before the Falcon Hunt, Private Collection and Others and other paintings by de Hamilton depicting horses or hunting animals, in which there is a strong similarity in the use of colour, brushwork and anatomical construction of animals.
