Clemente Spera, trained in Milan in the workshop of Giovanni Ghisolfi, was among the leading specialists in architectural capriccio with classical ruins, a genre in which he was often called upon to collaborate with important figure painters, particularly Alessandro Magnasco.

The canvas presented here fully expresses this repertoire: a large ruined arch, flanked by the remains of classical columns, provides a scenic backdrop for a crowded Adoration of the Shepherds. On the left, a group of figures, including shepherds and a woman with a basket of fruit on her head, approaches through the ruins, while on the right, the Holy Family, surrounded by onlookers and several animals, welcomes the Child placed in the cradle, in a play of light and shadow typical of Lombard ruin painting.

Condition report: Lined canvas. Good state of conservation of the pictorial surface, there are traces of old restorations and wear.
