Full details of the works (click HERE)
This pendant of still lifes of flowers is attributed to an exponent of the Lombard school of the second half of the 17th century, specifically to the workshop of Margherita Caffi (Cremona 1647 – Milan 1710). During this phase, which developed primarily in Milan from the late 17th century onward, the compositions were characterized by extreme freedom of execution and a departure from descriptive realism, favoring scenographic and chromatic effects.
Both works feature a lush bouquet of flowers, executed with painterly skill and meticulous attention to detail. They bring together a wide selection of flowers, including roses, anemones, tulips, and daffodils, characterized by a vibrant luminosity and highlighted by the dark background. The painting is characterized by an extreme freedom of brushstrokes, a weave of free and lively brushstrokes, typical of his style.
The painter was born in Cremona in 1647, daughter of the French painter Vincenzo Volò, active in Lombardy in the seventeenth century: this family workshop is called “dei Vicenzini” and imposed its style from the mid-seventeenth century to the first quarter of the eighteenth century, strongly influencing the taste of Milanese collectors for still lifes.
She then took on the artistic surname by marrying at a young age the Cremonese painter Ludovico Caffi, with whom she perhaps completed her training.
She was also active in Tuscany, where she worked and lived around the 1680s under the patronage of the Medici family, favored by Vittoria Della Rovere, wife of Ferdinand II. Renowned and sought-after throughout Europe, her patrons included the Archdukes of Tyrol and the Kings of Spain.
Towards the beginning of the eighteenth century he moved permanently to Milan, where he created a thriving workshop, a protagonist in the development of Baroque still life in Lombardy, knowing how to renew its figurative repertoire to satisfy the tastes of late seventeenth-century Milanese collectors.
