A pair of Louis XV mirrors of Neapolitan manufacture, in carved and gilded wood, which represent a high-value furnishing element, typical of the Rococo taste of the mid-18th century, although still influenced by Baroque elements, with plant shoots and flowers that create a sinuous profile.

The beautiful mask motif, repeated both on the top and the bottom, symbolizes strength, nobility, and protection, often used in the furnishings of noble palaces to underline the prestige of the family.

The mirrors are characterised by the union of sinuous lines, curls, “C” and “S” shaped scrolls, shell motifs (coquille) combined with the grotesque charm of anthropomorphic faces.

The upper part is surmounted by refined floral motifs, another typical fantasy of the decorative repertoire of this period, and even the internal shape in which the mirror is set, flared and with shaped sides, in addition to the complexity of the details, highlight the grace and elegance typical of Neapolitan craftsmanship of this period, denoting the excellent technical skill of the master carver.

CONSERVATION: The state of preservation, considering the fragility and age of the two works, is good. They have undergone restoration. These antique mercury-silvered mirrors have defects appropriate to their age, such as typical oxidation stains due to age (see photos for details).
