Vernis Martin: The technique was developed in 1728 by the Martin brothers who held a monopoly on it for twenty years. It was applied in overlapping layers, then left to dry and then painted with landscapes, figures and genre scenes.
The decorations on the Martin vernis were entrusted to talented painters. The fashion for Martin vernis continued into the nineteenth century and lacquered and painted furniture became one of the characteristics of the Napoleon III style.
