Dated 1923
80 cm x 100 cm canvas
Original Animalier painting, oil on canvas depicting a herd of European deer fleeing across the moor, signed and dated lower right H. Capelmann 1923.
Hermann Capelmann, a painter of German origin, attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf and later specialized in the animalier genre. The works at the beginning of his artistic career concerned landscapes and genre scenes linked to everyday life. He rediscovered his naturalistic streak after seeing the works of Christian Kroner, a painter dedicated to the representation of game that he used to portray live. Capelmann developed his pictorial language regarding Animalier subjects, receiving greater acclaim from the public and meeting the taste of collectors who, like him, remain convinced animalists who love Nature.
The pack is made up of the male equipped with a majestic antler, preceded by three females who quickly enter the thick vegetation of bushes and scrub.
The palette is predominantly bright tones, as the painting is detailed on the animals and vibrant in small touches regarding the landscape. The naturalistic context represents the coniferous forest typical of the European territory.
The painting is in an excellent state of conservation.
