Mid-17th century;
Width 28,5 x 28,5 cm; Including frame 54 x 54 cm;
Splendid oil painting on copper depicting the sacred scene of the Adoration of the Shepherds, made with great attention to chromatic details and facial expressions. The work, from the Flemish school of the mid-17th century, represents the moment in which the shepherds pay homage to the Child Jesus, surrounded by Mary, Joseph and other devout figures. The center of the composition is illuminated by a golden halo that overlooks the Madonna and the newborn, creating an effect of intense spirituality.
Attributable to the painter Cornelis de Baellieur the Elder (Antwerp, 1607-1671) who made his debut in his homeland, where he had “Lisart” as an excellent tutor, becoming himself an established master – he was a free master of the prestigious Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke –, author mainly of works with religious subjects, much sought after by the clergy, nobles and rich Antwerp merchants.
The painting is framed in a precious ebonized wooden frame with elegant golden decorations with floral and curlicue motifs, perfectly preserved. The frame itself is a refined example of decorative art, able to further enhance the sacred subject of the work.
