Description

Model: Chester Club and Queen Anne / The 'Chesterfield' sofa is a classic, having earned its place at the forefront as an icon of vintage design. But there is some confusion about the origin of its name.
Paul Fleming, fourth-generation Fleming Howland furniture maker whose company has copyrighted the name ‘Chesterfield’, says it’s a complete mystery: “We’ve been making them for years, we’ve searched museums and we haven’t found a single piece of paper!” Of course, there are anecdotes. Some say it was named after the Earl of Chesterfield, something of a fashion maven in his day. Elsewhere it’s said it originally referred to the style of leather buttoning, the shape of the back bench and even the height of the seat and armrests.
The term “Club”, associated with Chesters, originates from the composition of very square seats with low armrests that thus favored participation in conversation without visual impediments to the sides of the head: originally they were even equipped with wheels, which allowed in the Clubs of the English nobles ???? to compose or break up conversation groups with extreme ease. The comfort, the speed with which “conversation islands” were created imposed these sofas and armchairs in the headquarters of noble associations and in haute sports clubs.
