The proposed painting is the work of a Flemish painter active between the 1499th and 1592th centuries in the circle of Michael Coxie (Malines, 1 – Malines, XNUMX), following the famous compositions of the great master, who brilliantly attempted this classic of religious painting in various occasions [XNUMX], where the dramatic style is realized with a skilful play of light and shadow.

Ecce Homo is the evangelical episode during which Jesus, awaiting his condemnation and after the flagellation, is presented to the people by Pilate, then Roman governor of Judea, who we see portrayed here at his side.
The canvas immortalizes the moment in which the Savior accepts his final destiny: in his face, not only humiliation but a moment of profound introspection and emotion. He is portrayed with a crown of thorns placed on his long hair and stripped of his clothes, with his hands tied and crossed, alluding to his immediate crucifixion on Golgotha.
''Ecce homo'', which literally means Here is the Man, was the phrase pronounced by Pilate himself to designate the scourged Jesus and to ingratiate himself with the crowd, aware of having condemned an innocent man.
This type of representation of Christ was very widespread in the 16th century, giving rise to particularly intense creations, especially in the Flemish context.
We are certainly not faced with an 'easy' work, but one equally capable of moving, without leaving indifferent even those who do not prefer subjects with such a strong emotional impact. Whipped and mocked while awaiting his martyrdom, it is striking that his face appears sad, resigned, but not suffering, evoking the compassion that he granted to his executioners.
The table is in good conservation conditions, considering its age, in turn applied to a wooden support to consolidate its structure.
