Eliseo Sala's Prayer is an oil on canvas, signed lower right, and represents one of the Lombard artist's genre paintings, combining romantic sensibility, psychological insight, and refined lighting. The work depicts a young woman captured in a moment of devotional contemplation, her hands clasped and her gaze raised, immersed in a silent, suspended atmosphere. The figure emerges from a dark, neutral background, isolating the protagonist and focusing attention on her facial expression and hand gestures. The expertly measured light caresses the young woman's features, while the warm tones of her skin interact with the soft white of her shirt and the contrasting colors of her clothing. The simple yet meticulously detailed dress helps place the scene in an everyday context. The subject's emotional intensity is primarily conveyed by her gaze, which betrays an intimate and personal prayer. Eliseo Sala, born in 1813 into a wealthy family, lost his father at the age of nineteen and was entrusted to his uncle Giuseppe De Capitani d'Arzaglio, a marquis and influential Milanese politician. In 1832, he enrolled at the Brera Academy, where he studied nudes under Luigi Sabatelli and Filippo Comerico. During these years, he achieved significant recognition, winning silver medals in 1835 and 1836 for several reproductions, a sign of his precocious technical mastery. Beginning in 1839, he embarked on a series of advanced travels with his friend Ferdinando Bassi, which played a decisive role in his development: in Venice, he carefully studied Titian's Assumption, and in Rome, he came into contact with Francesco Coghetti, from whom he learned a freer and more vibrant conception of color, inspired by the Venetian tradition. In 1848, due to the political situation and his anti-Austrian beliefs, Sala moved to Turin, where he began a successful career as a portrait painter. In the following years, he traveled extensively, including participating in the first Universal Exhibition in London, and staying in Paris, Brussels, Cologne, and Geneva. In 1860, he painted the portrait of Count Cavour and in 1863 that of Victor Emmanuel II, confirming his role as a painter appreciated in the political and institutional circles of the new Italian state. Celebrated by contemporary critics as one of the leading Lombard portraitists, compared in fame to Francesco Hayez and Giacomo Trecourt, Sala was the author of numerous commissions for royal, noble, and upper-middle-class families. Alongside official portraits, however, he never completely abandoned genre and religious subjects, such as Prayer, in which a more intimate style of painting emerges.
