Work signed lower left: «E. Magistretti».
Emilio Magistretti was a Milanese painter active between the second half of the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century. Trained in the academic world of Lombardy, he spent time in Paris, where he absorbed the influences of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, which he integrated with a solid foundation of realism. His portraiture is distinguished by a vibrant use of color and an ability to capture the psychology of his subjects with restraint and effectiveness.
The painting depicts a young woman in a half-length, three-quarter view, looking sideways, in a composed and casual pose. Her left arm encircles the neck of a tiger, rendered with naturalistic care in its striped fur. The background, treated with loose touches of green and ochre, lends depth without distracting attention from the figure. The execution harks back to the stylistic elements of fin-de-siècle Parisian painting, the period to which the work most likely dates.
