Emilio Magistretti (Milan 1851 – Milan 1936) was an Italian painter active between the second half of the XNUMXth century and the early XNUMXth century. His style, while maintaining a strong realistic foundation, was influenced by the techniques of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, which he encountered during his time in Paris. This fusion of traditional and modern elements enabled him to capture the essence of his subjects with great realism and to capture a profound introspection in his portraits. His subjects display a great humanity combined with a vibrant and dynamic use of color. Our young woman is depicted bare-breasted, embracing a gentle tiger cub. The enigmatic expression on her face suggests calm and self-confidence, which also emerge from the attributes of nudity and the dangerous feline. The work is signed lower left and strongly recalls the stylistic features of Parisian art of the period, so the model may have been painted during this period. The frame, in carved and cream-colored lacquered wood, is original and contemporary with the canvas.
