Rare Magot in finely hand-decorated porcelain in polychrome, head with tongue and tilting hands, Ernst Bohne Sohne, Rudolstadt, Germany, late 19th century,
Dimensions: Height 14 cm Length 15 Depth 15 cm
In good condition.
The figurine of a female figure draped with floral decoration is portrayed sitting with legs crossed and hands stretched forward. Some Magot models, just like ours featured here, have movable body parts including hands, tongue and head. The Magot personify the Chinese god of abundance and happiness Pu-Tai in human form and during the eighteenth century these small figurines, imported into Europe from Cathay, found some success in aristocratic homes as a sign of exoticism and were renamed "Magot" , which in France means barbary ape, as a sign of cheerfulness.
Inside is a particular and rare movement which, once recharged, allows the synchronous movement of hands and head. An object that is certainly unusual and bizarre but at the same time of great value and with a certain oriental charm, a true exotic gem.
