Description

Ancient etching engraved in 1813 by the engraver and sculptor Giovanni Battista Balestra (Bassano del Grappa 1774 – Rome 1842). The engraving, drawn by the Tyrolean painter Kock Michael (Innsbruk 1760 – Rome 1825) depicts the suicide of Dido and is the pair of the famous painting by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri known as Guercino (Cento 1591 – Bologna 1666) preserved in the Spada Gallery in Rome and entitled: “Death of Dido”.
The printer is Niccolò Pagani, a publisher active in Florence between the last quarter of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century.
Interestingly, the engraving was produced and dedicated specifically by Pagani to Giuseppe Ulivelli Ulivieri, an honorary academician of the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, as a gift.
A pair of the engravings is preserved at the Central Institute for Graphics in Rome in the Corsini collection, you can find it online.
The etching is sold in a truly valuable contemporary frame, made of walnut wood as can be seen in the photos.
The glass of the frame is original, blown and pulled by hand, the slight surface undulation and small occlusions not visible in the photos testify to its originality.
measures:
External frame 86,5 x 79,5 cm
Engraving sheet 72,5 x 65,5 cm
