Extendable inlaid dining table. Piacenza, second half of the 18th century.
113 x 113 xh 81 cm, open 213 x 113 xh 81 cm.
Extendable dining table in solid inlaid walnut, with two extension leaves that slide under the top and fluted, tapered square legs in a neoclassical style. The square top features an inlaid decoration in light woods on a walnut background: an acanthus leaf rosette within a circular clypeus at the center, vegetal scroll motifs at the corners, and a filleted border around the edge. The extension leaves are inlaid with playing card motifs, a decorative repertoire common in Northern Italian cabinetmaking in the last quarter of the 18th century. The overall decoration is in keeping with the Louis XVI style, with meticulous attention to the quality of the inlay and the compositional balance of the top.
Condition report: Good overall condition. Signs of use and period patina on the frame. Some minor flaws in the inlay.
