Description

Ezaias Terwesten known as Paradiso (Ouwerkerk 1651-Rome 1724 or 1729)

Still life with vase of flowers

Oil painting on canvas. 74,5 x 63 cm

A vase full of flowers emerges from the dark background of the canvas. This is placed on a surface whose presence is partially revealed by a beam of light that cuts the image vertically and leaves the rich and colorful bouquet as the absolute protagonist, which develops and occupies almost the entire available surface. Buds and corollas are depicted by the painter with meticulous attention to detail. In this regard, note the refinement in describing a few drops of dew on the petals of the roses. The petals and leaves are rendered using quick touches of the brush but with an overall effect of great definition and volumetric rendering, also thanks to the skilful use of chiaroscuro and highlights.

This still life may be included in the catalog of Esaias Terwesten known as Paradiso (16151-1724), a painter of Dutch origin of whom little has been handed down about his biography and works. We know that he was active in Berlin for the Elector of Brandenburg together with his brother Augustjn I (1649-1711) and that from 1694 he moved to Rome, to Bentveughel and also had relations with the Vatican. We know that the nickname "Paradise" was given to him once he joined the Bentveughel, an association of Dutch and Flemish painters that prospered in Rome between 1620 and 1720 in opposition to the Accademia di San Luca.

The attribution to Terwesten is confirmed when compared to his few certain works: Vase of flowers with fruit and two guinea pigs in a landscape, signed “E. Terwe Paradiso 170” preserved in Rijswijk, Institute Collectie Nederland; Large still life of flowers in a landscape, with a watermelon, fruit and a rabbit, in a private collection. These have the same vertical development as the stems and flowers which fill almost the entire space, standing out in the dim light.

Terwasten's compositions are certainly influenced by Franz Werner Tamm known as Daprait or Dapper (1658-1724) and by Karel van Vogelaer known as Carlo dei Fiori (1653-1695). Tamm's influence is evident when comparing this canvas by Terwestein with Flowers in a Silver Vase on a Shelf, formerly London, Christie's and Still Life of a Vase of Flowers by FW Tamm. A reference to Vogelaer can instead be found by observing Vase of Flowers in a private collection in Legnano.
