The work depicting the bust of a young girl covered by the rich hooded cloak that wraps around her shoulders is the work of the Tuscan sculptor Ezio Ceccarelli. He was born in Montecatini in Val di Cecina on 27 July 1865 to a family of humble origins. His father, who went to live in Florence, first placed him in the office of the lawyer Oreste Ciampi, who, seeing in the boy a greater inclination for drawing and art than for citations and legal documents, placed him in the office of sculptor Ulisse Cambi, where Ceccarelli stayed for a year, then enrolling at the Academy of Fine Arts, meeting professor Augusto Rivalta. At 18 he exhibited for the first time in the rooms of the Florentine Promotrice a bust entitled: "After the reproach", which was purchased by Mr. Soria of Livorno; Afterwards he modeled two figurines for the Lapini family entitled: “The choice of a flower” and “The complacency”, which are currently in London. He then made a figure, entitled "Idle Hours", with a slender and elegant line, representing a little girl, who after working in the row has taken the distaff on her shoulders and dropped the spindle, with which a kitten plays, while she smiles. This pleased many artists and brought him commissions and praise. At the 1891 Promotrice he exhibited a bust entitled: “Without Work”, which was judged by Rivalta and the local press to be a very fine work in terms of form and feeling. He then modeled a figure for Messrs. Fanfani and Natali, who sold it to Mr. Antonio Frilli, and then took part in the competition for the artistic pensioner in Rome announced by the Ministry of Education
He exhibited his works in numerous European capitals, from St. Petersburg to Munich, Brussels, Liège, London, Dublin, Barcelona, ​​Paris. He was also present, with his works, at four editions of the Venice Biennale. During his visits to Paris he then had the opportunity to meet the now famous French sculptor Auguste Rodin and to appreciate his artistic conception of which he was a tenacious supporter.
There are many noteworthy sculptures of his: the Garibaldi monument in the square of the same name in Massa; that of Cavour in the Padua town of Este; the monument of the South American patriot Josè Gervasio Artigas in the Uruguayan city of Paysandù; that of Christopher Columbus in La Plata in Argentina; a bust of Giosuè Carducci in San Miniato al Tedesco; the «Angel of Death» preserved in the Gallery of Palazzo Pitti; a famous «Ecce Homo» which was so successful that it induced the author to entrust its serial reproduction to the Ghiozzi factory in Florence. Important creations by him are also present in museums and private collections; particularly rich in his works is the collection of the heirs of the merchant Luigi Martini, a fervent admirer of the art of Ezio Ceccarelli, of whom he was for years the most faithful client, and who, after his death, took over all the production remaining in his renowned Florentine workshop.
In December 2004, the exhibition «Two Sculptors and a Monument» was held at the Palazzo Ducale in Massa, dedicated to the restoration, by the students of the local “Felice Palma” Art Institute, of the monument to Garibaldi modeled by Ezio Ceccarelli and executed in 1906 by Fernando Tombesi in the famous Cuturi laboratory in Massa.
