early eighteenth century
Giacinto Diano (attr.) (Pozzuoli, 1731 – Naples, 1803)
Holy Bishop in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
Oil on canvas, 83 x 68 cm
With the 94 x 79 frame
The canvas Holy Bishop in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is attributed to the workshop of Giacinto Diano, as clearly suggested by the formal solutions adopted in the rendering of the clouds, the bright colors, and the anatomical construction of the cherubs—elements that find precise parallels in the master's definitive work. The painting depicts a holy bishop kneeling in an attitude of profound devotion before the Blessed Sacrament, placed at the center of the composition within a sunburst monstrance, suspended among the clouds and illuminated by an intense light that emphasizes its sacramental and theological significance. The saint is depicted with his hands clasped and his gaze fixed and focused on the Eucharist. His body emerges from a dense blanket of clouds, which serves as a transition between the earthly and celestial dimensions, following an iconographic solution widely used in 18th-century Neapolitan devotional painting. Around the monstrance are angels bathed in a vibrant golden light. The lower part of the composition depicts suffering souls emerging from the flames, a clear reference to Purgatory. The bodies, rendered with heightened anatomical realism, assume imploring poses and turn upward, establishing a strong visual and conceptual connection with the figure of the saint and the Blessed Sacrament. This iconographic structure effectively emphasizes the saving power of the Eucharist and the mediating role of the Church, embodied by the holy bishop, between suffering humanity and divine mercy. Stylistically, the painting features warm, enveloping colors, a balanced use of chiaroscuro, and a fluid, controlled brushstroke. These elements hark back to the persistence of the naturalistic and Baroque tradition in 18th-century Neapolitan painting, particularly in devotional works intended for churches, confraternities, and religious patrons.
