Giuseppe Migneco is one of the most original figures of twentieth-century Italy, active between Messina and Milan, where he came into contact with the Corrente movement and developed a highly intense expressive language. His work is characterized by a nervous and incisive style, capable of conveying psychological tension and popular humanity with economy of means.
This 1946 drawing depicts a fortune teller examining the cards spread out on the table, her hands clasped before her face in a gesture of concentration. The rapid, confident ink strokes construct the figure's face with an expressive power typical of the artist's finest graphic work: the dark circles under her eyes and the fixed gaze lend the subject an almost theatrical intensity. In the background, a few rapid strokes evoke an interior without defining it, leaving all the compositional power to the central figure.
