Giuseppe Zais is among the most celebrated landscape painters of the 18th-century Venetian school, known for his depictions of bucolic scenes with stylized figures of shepherds and washerwomen set in idyllic rural landscapes. He trained in Venice, where he observed the works of Marco Ricci, from whom he drew clear inspiration for his landscape construction and figure rendering.

This mounted battle is unique in the production of the Belluno artist, who rarely attempted military subjects. The work reveals an unexpected mastery of the genre, with a dynamic composition and a darker, more dramatic palette than his usual pastoral scenes, recalling the tradition of battle painting of Flemish and Dutch influence, widespread in 18th-century Venice.

The painting depicts the scene in full swing, with an officer on a white horse in the center dominating the melee, surrounded by fighting infantry and cavalry. In the background, a fortress on a rocky spur stands out against a stormy sky, a landscape that directly recalls the construction of the artist's most famous works, revealing the same loose, textured brushwork.
