Giuseppe Zais is among the most celebrated painters of the 18th-century Venetian school, known for his lively scenes featuring figures of wayfarers, shepherds, and horsemen set in highly realistic rural landscapes. He trained in Venice, where he observed the works of Marco Ricci, from whom he drew inspiration for his landscape construction and plein air depiction of figures.

Zais's style was distinguished by the use of brown, earthy tones and a textured, thick application of color, which gave his compositions a sense of concreteness and immediacy unlike the more conventional landscape painting of his time.

The painting, confidently attributed to Giuseppe Zais, is an elongated horizontal overdoor painting: a procession of knights occupies the entire width of the scene, with three figures on horseback in the center and a group of figures on foot to the sides. To the left stands a fortress with a cylindrical tower, while in the background to the right lies a lake landscape with architectural ruins. The overall effect is executed with the loose, textured brushwork typical of the Belluno artist's mature work.
