Pair of portraits of Louis XV, King of France, and Queen Consort Maria Leszczyńska

It is easy to identify the subjects of this fascinating couple of portraits as the rulers of France, namely Louis King of Poland Stanislaus I.

The queen is represented in three-quarter length, with her face smiling and turned towards the viewer. She wears a wig in shades of gray with her hair gathered around her neck and a tiara on her head, and pendants in her ears. She wears a dress with a wide neckline in red velvet, brocade with gold threads, with rich lace sleeves, and a bodice adorned with a bib with a diamond and pearl jewel. On her shoulders rests a blue velvet cloak embroidered with the heraldic lilies of the Crown of France and covered in ermine.

The ruler, also immortalized in three-quarter view, wears armor over a coat, with a blue sash on the shoulder and a white collar that surrounds his neck. His face highlights the same reassuring expression that illuminates his wife's face.

It is assumed that these portraits are a derivation of a pair of official paintings of the sovereigns most likely executed by Jean-Baptiste van Loo (1684-1745), prototypes which are traditionally dated to the year of the wedding, 1725, and of which several smaller format replicas.

Similar features of the rulers can be recognized in paintings made by contemporaries, such as in the canvases of Charles Van Loo (collection of the Palace of Versailles, Salon de Mars), Jean Marc Nattier (Muzeum Narodowe, Warsaw), Alexis-Simon Belle (Trianon). We can name another painter who dedicated himself to these subjects, namely Pierre Gobert (Fontainebleau 1662 – Paris 1744), whose portraiture shows close stylistic affinities with our two portraits.

One of the most significant and sought-after portraitists of his time and a great interpreter of the French school, working in France at the courts of Louis XIV and then Louis existence of a complex workshop: it is therefore plausible to hypothesize that these were created by one of his direct and faithful collaborators.

The pair of works is presented in a good state of conservation, with beautiful carved and gilded wooden frames, also in excellent condition.
