We present this splendid Florentine work, an image of the Virgin holding the blessing Child in her arms, portrayed standing on a refined gold-edged cushion.
Irradiated by an intense divine radiance, the little son of God, himself a source of light, is depicted as an infant with a pale complexion and thick, slightly curled blond hair. The figure of the Madonna, with perfect features and silky smooth skin, appears full of tenderness and maternal love, gazing out at the viewer.
The high quality found in the execution of the figures is also masterfully underlined in the rendering of the fabrics, orchestrated mainly on precious effects rich in enamel, alternating, for the most part, between lapis lazuli blue and the more iridescent red.
From the point of view of pictorial authorship, both for the technique and the stylistic rendering, the painting can be attributed to a Tuscan artist strongly influenced by the Florentine Alessandro Allori (Florence 1535 – 1607).
Trained in the workshop of Agnolo di Cosimo, where he perfected his skills in drawing and the study of human anatomy, Allori completed his apprenticeship in Rome, being strongly influenced by the style of the great masters of Mannerism. After returning to Florence, the artist was appointed official painter at the Medici court and, to accommodate the ever-growing number of commissions, opened his own workshop.
The work presented here should probably be traced back to the circle of Alessandro Allori's students: the name of his son and collaborator Cristofano Allori (Florence 1577 – 1621) could be fitting, as he, like his father, was linked to the Florentine academic tradition.
The attention to both the meticulous description of details and the naturalistic rendering of the subjects are elements that highlight how this painting has close similarities with many works created by Allori: as emerges from our canvas, the painter highlights the beauty of the Virgin, interpreted as an ethereal woman, characterized by the candor of her complexion, highlighted by the monochrome black background, which at the same time does not lapse into affectation, but is instead characterized by a strong character.
This representative typology continued throughout his career, studded with a large number of portrait commissions. Compare some details of our work with the self-portrait by Cristofano Allori, housed in the Uffizi Palace (Vasari Corridor, Florence).
