Il dipinto raffigura la Predica di san Giovanni Battista in un paesaggio boscoso, soggetto di larga fortuna nella pittura fiamminga e nordica attiva in Italia tra Sei e Settecento. La scena si articola attorno alla figura del Precursore, in piedi su una roccia al centro della composizione, circondato da una folla numerosa e variegata che include cavalieri, figure orientaleggianti, donne e bambini. Sullo sfondo si aprono rovine architettoniche e una valle con specchio d’acqua, elementi tipici del paesaggio di tradizione nordica elaborato in ambito italianizzante. La tavolozza cromatica, la resa delle fronde e la gestione della luce rimandano alla cultura figurativa fiamminga filtrata attraverso l’esperienza italiana, in una tradizione che conta riferimenti da Jan Brueghel il Vecchio a Pieter van Laer.
