The two figures in the image belong to the great Neapolitan nativity scene tradition of the late 18th century, a period of extraordinary artistic flourish that saw Neapolitan workshops establish themselves as a European benchmark for the production of shepherds and nativity scene figures. These two painted terracotta figurines are dressed in real fabric, using a technique typical of the Neapolitan school, which lends the compositions a unique realism and vivacity.

The first figure, taller and set on a circular base of dark wood, depicts a young man of noble and elegant appearance, with wavy blond hair and a finely crafted, smooth face. He wears an ivory-colored robe with gold trim and a thin belt at the waist; the gesture of his right hand, with slightly raised fingers, suggests a pose of dialogue or blessing. The second figure depicts an older, bearded man with strong features and an intense expression, wrapped in olive-green robes and a flowing ochre-yellow cloak. His bowed posture and open hands convey devotion and reverence.

These works fit fully into the tradition of the Neapolitan workshops active between the second half of the eighteenth century and the early nineteenth century, in which masters such as Giuseppe Sanmartino and the Mosca brothers brought the nativity scene figurine to levels of absolute plastic excellence.
