The painting finds evident compositional analogies with the works of Abraham Mignon, in particular with a work now preserved in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The painter's training took place at home under the guidance of Jacob Marrel, the famous naturamortista. In seventeenth century he moved to the Netherlands, in Utrecht, as a pupil of Jan Davidszoon de Heem, and in he was eighteenth century in the Guild of San Luca. Mignon was one of the greatest still life painters of his time, capable of combining the baroque exuberance of his compositions with the careful analytical and minute representation of the Nordic tradition, especially in the mimesis of insects and fruits.
