FULL DETAILS OF THE WORK (CLICK HERE)

The composition features a rich floral bouquet placed within an elegant, barely visible vase with a classic profile, resting on a surface beneath that blends into the dim light. The bouquet is composed of various species, depicted with exceptional naturalistic precision. Particularly noteworthy are striped tulips (in shades of red, white, and pink), open roses, carnations with jagged petals, and small white flowers such as jasmine or anemone that punctuate the composition.

The painting is attributed to the workshop of Giovanni Stanchi, also known as Stanchi dei Fiori.

Giovanni Stanchi (Rome, 1608 – 1675 approx.) was the head of a prolific family workshop that collaborated with the most illustrious Roman families, such as the Barberini, the Chigi and the Colonna.

Stanchi's flower paintings represent a crucial moment in the transition from Caravaggio-style naturalism to the decorative magnificence of the Roman Baroque.

The work is characterized by a strong chiaroscuro contrast of Caravaggio-esque origin, where the flowers emerge with vibrant luminosity from a completely dark background, which amplifies the brilliance and vivacity of the red, white and gold pigments, and gives the corollas an almost sculptural three-dimensionality.

The formal accuracy and precision in portraying the petals and leaves demonstrate the influence of the Flemish masters and the great technical skill of the Stanchi workshop in rendering reflections and natural freshness.

The painting is enclosed in an important period cassette frame, characterised by lacquered bands in shades of blue-green with gilded profiles and eye-catching carved and gilded corner decorations with leaf motifs.
