The “cloisonnè” or “Byzantium luster” is an enamel technique. In this technique, thin metal wires are fixed to the metal of the bottom, shaping the cells, or cloison. Enamel is a glassy, shiny substance that is melted and applied while hot on a metal support. The main types of decorative enamels are champlev, repouss and cloisonné. Among the variety of enamelling systems, cloisonné appears more complex than the others as it requires greater technological skill.
