Pietro Paltronieri, known as Mirandolese, was one of the leading figures of Bolognese quadratura in the early eighteenth century. Trained in the workshop of Giovan Francesco Cassana, he later moved to Bologna and Rome, where he deepened his study of views and classical antiquities, following the traditional learning path of artists of the century. He was among the painters summoned by the impresario Owen MacSwiny for the famous cycle of the Tombeaux des Princes (1722–1726), alongside Canaletto, Sebastiano Ricci, Marco Ricci, and Giovan Battista Pittoni.
The capriccio presented here fully reflects this mature style, blending the rigorous Roman perspective, evident in the ruined colonnades and arches, with the loose brushwork of the Venetian school. The waterfall in the background harks back to the influence of Claude Lorrain, while the lively, childlike figures in the foreground introduce a sense of everyday life to the scene. The perspective, constructed as a funnel toward the blue-tinted mountain backdrop, is a recurring compositional device in the master's finest works.
